Profile

Silvia E. Giorguli Saucedo is a sociologist and demographer and has been the president of El Colegio de México since 2015. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and a Master's degree in Demography from El Colegio de México. In 2004, she obtained her Ph.D. in Sociology from Brown University. She has been a research professor at the Center for Demographic, Urban, and Environmental Studies at El Colegio de México since 2003 and served as the director of the same center from 2009 to 2015. She conducted a research stay at the Center for the Advanced Study of Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University (2007-2008).

Her research has focused on three main areas: i) international migration in the Americas; ii) transitions to adulthood in Mexico and Latin America; iii) the intersection between demographic dynamics, education, and public policies. According to the topics, she has incorporated a gender perspective across her research. Her books, articles, and publications generally focus on these three areas of work.

She has collaborated in various research projects related to her areas of focus. She is currently a Co-Principal Investigator of the Mesoamerican Migration Project (El Colegio de México and Brown University) and the 2021 Recent Immigration Survey of the Latin American Migration Project (El Colegio de México, Brown University, and the University of the Republic). From 2017 to 2020, she coordinated the project "Access to Social Rights and Return Migration to Mexico" (El Colegio de México and the National Human Rights Commission of Mexico).

She was president of Sociedad Mexicana de Demografía, A.C. (2011-2012) and founded and directed the publication Coyuntura Demográfica. Revista sobre los procesos Demográficos en México hoy (2011-2014). Since its foundation in 2017, she has been the director of the Otros Diálogos journal at El Colegio de México, an open-access electronic publication.

She has participated in various international scientific and academic committees, including the Scientific Advisory Committee of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Vienna (2016-2022), the Academic Committee of the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford (since 2021), and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (since 2024). She has also participated as a member of Citizen Councils in various government agencies in Mexico on issues of migration, population policy, and childhood.

She has collaborated with international organizations as a committee member and in research work with UNFPA, UNICEF, UN Women. Among these experiences, her participation as Senior Research Advisor for the World Population Report 2023 and as a member since 2024 of the High-Level Advisory Board for social development issues at UNESCO stands out. She has also participated in various working groups on migration policies, such as co-chairing the North and Central America Task Force on Migration (2020-2023).

She is a member of the National System of Researchers (Level III) and the Mexican Academy of Sciences. She was a Fulbright-García Robles fellow and received the Gabino Barreda Medal from UNAM in 1993 and the Horace Mann Medal from Brown University in 2018. Since April 2024, she has been a member of the Governing Board of UNAM. Starting in February 2025, she will join El Colegio Nacional in Mexico, a distinguished public institution dedicated to the dissemination of scientific, artistic, and humanistic culture.
